1838 Senate Bill Reorganizing the Department of Indian Affairs
March 3, 1838-Dated, Official Printed Text of Senate Bill 264, Reorganizing the Department of Indian Affairs, About Fine.
This original, large size, 6 page, officially printed text of Senate Bill 264, measuring 13.5” x 8.5,” amends the 1834 Bill which organized the Department of Indian Affairs. This new bill repeals the provision that the Superintendent of Indian Affairs reside at St. Louis, and outlines the various postings for Indian Agents and Sub-Agents. Postings for Indian Agents were to be at Fort Brady; Fort Snelling; Council Bluffs; Fort Leavenworth; the Osage River; an agent for the Cherokees; an agent for the Creeks; and an agent for the Choctaws. Sub-Agents for other tribes and locations are also listed. This document is in fair condition, complete and intact, lightly age toned, with several fold separations (one on the back page repaired with stamp hinges) and a small amount of writing on the back page (not affecting any text). An important American historical document.
