<B>1838 PS$1 Name Omitted, Judd-84 Restrike, Pollock-93, R.5, PR64 NGC.</B></I> Silver. Reeded edge. Die Alignment III (center of Liberty's head opposite N in ONE). Another Die Alignment III 1838 dollar, and an unusual, high grade offering of this rarity. The die cracks through MERI in AMERICA and at the base of LAR in DOLLAR are extremely faint, indicating this was probably one of the first restrikes coined in the 1860s under Henry Linderman's first term as mint director. If one accepts that die cracks become more pronounced over time (a logical conclusion), and that only one pair of dies was used, then one comes to a curious conclusion regarding 1838 dollars. That is, the Die Alignment IV coins were most likely struck <I>before</B></I> the Die Alignment III coins, as they sometimes lack the reverse die cracks and such coins may represent original strikings from 1839.<BR> Only 250-300 restrike 1838 dollars are believed to have been produced on an irregular basis (according to who was mint director at the time) over a 20-year period from the late 1850s through the late 1870s. Dollars dated 1838 are definitely the rarest of the three dates of the Gobrecht design. There are certainly very few examples in this superlative condition. NGC and PCGS combined have only certified seven other pieces in PR64, and only two Gems have been graded (both by NGC). This is a magnificent coin that has deeply mirrored fields. The striking details are especially crisp with complete definition on Liberty's head, the peripheral stars, reverse lettering, and the eagle's plumage. The surfaces display warm golden-rose coloration that is irregularly spread over each side with occasional deep blue toning around the margins. There are no obvious marks on either side of this immensely attractive near-Gem.
