1838<PS$1> Name Omitted, Judd-84 Original, Pollock-93, R.5--Polished, Artificial Toning--NCS. Impaired Proof. Silver. Reeded edge. Die Alignment III (head of Liberty opposite the N in ONE). This coin appears to be an original; that is, a piece that was produced during the first striking period in the late 1850s. No coins are known in Die Alignment I and even the Smithsonian's example is in Die Alignment IV. There are no die cracks on the reverse of this piece. That and the alignment indicate it was struck in the late 1850s, as later restrikes all show microscopic die cracks on the reverse. This coin shows noticeable softness of highpoint details, most evident on Liberty's foot and peripheral stars. Close examination with a magnifier also shows a lack of crispness between the lettering and fields on the reverse. This seems somewhat curious since these coins were allegedly struck as "trade bait" by James Ross Snowden. The surfaces are extensively hairlined from cleaning, and the coin displays light golden-rose coloration. An interesting coin for the specialist.
