<B>1838<P50C> Half Dollar, Judd-73 Restrike, Pollock-77, R.5, PR64 NGC.</B></I> The obverse, once attributed to Chief Engraver William Kneass, is more likely the work of assistant Christian Gobrecht. It depicts a draped bust of Liberty facing left with 13 stars around the periphery and the date below. Liberty wears a diadem and the scroll over her hair is inscribed with LIBERTY. A flying eagle faces left, dominating the reverse. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination HALF DOLLAR are around the periphery. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. Restrikes are believed to have been made around 1858, continuing throughout the 1860s and 1870s. This appears to be an earlier restrike as there is only one light crack from the reverse rim at 4 o'clock into the center. The fields are bright and show considerable reflectivity through the deep gray and blue toning that covers each side.
