1838 P50C Half Dollar, Judd-73 Original ?, Pollock-77, R.7, PR64 PCGS. The obverse depicts a draped bust of Liberty facing left with thirteen stars around the periphery and the date below. Liberty is wearing a diadem and the scroll over her hair is inscribed with LIBERTY. A flying eagle facing left dominates the reverse. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination HALF DOLLAR are around the periphery. Struck in silver with a reeded edge, medallic alignment of the dies. We believe this is a mechanical error on PCGS' part. They have the coin labeled as an original, but the heavy die cracks on the reverse lead us to believe (along with the consignor) that it is a restrike. Pollock indicates that the restrikes are heavier than the originals, but since the coin is encapsulated we have no way of determining for certain the coin's status; however, the heavy die cracks are a pretty good indication. Each side is deeply toned and the fields show brightly reflective mirrors but the piece must be angled just so for the mirrors to fully flash through the multiple layerings of color.
