1838 P50C Half Dollar, Judd-72, Pollock-75, R.5, PR65 NGC. On the obverse a bust of Liberty, with luxuriant hair tresses, faces left with seven stars to the left and six to the right. Liberty wears a diadem and a ribbon inscribed LIBERTY. The date is below the bust. On the reverse an eagle grasps an olive branch and four arrows in its claws. Around, the statutory legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and the denomination HALF DOLLAR below. Struck in silver with a reeded edge.
With the completion of the Gobrecht dollar designs, Mint Engraver Christian Gobrecht turned his eye for coinage redesign to the next largest silver coin denomination, the half dollar. However, powerful forces of "consistency" were at work: The final half dollar design, as adopted in 1839, featured the Seated Liberty motif of the Gobrecht silver dollar obverse, combined with a pedestrian reverse rearrangement of the John Reich design in use with modifications from 1807 onward.
This piece boasts superbly toned iridescent surfaces with electric blue predominating in the centers, with lilac, yellow, and orange at the borders. The pristine surfaces show only the tiniest of contact marks, and the strike is quite sharp. Two die lines run from the tip of the bust to a denticle beneath star 1. A bit of apparent die rust shows beneath the eagle's claws on the reverse.
From The Jones Beach Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
