<B>1838<P50C> Half Dollar, Judd-72, Pollock-75, R.5, PR63 PCGS.</B></I> This is William Kneass' design although this was probably executed by Christian Gobrecht. The obverse depicts a draped bust of Liberty facing left. Liberty wears a diadem and a ribbon inscribed LIBERTY. The date is below. On the reverse, an eagle with outstretched wings holds four arrows in its right (facing) claw and an olive branch in its left. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination HALF DOLLAR are around the periphery. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. The medallic alignment is seen on almost all known examples. Probably an earlier (original) striking, the centers are strongly brought up, however, there is evidence of die rust under the eagle's tailfeathers. The fields are deeply reflective and both sides are peripherally toned with deep russet color. An outstanding example of this popular early pattern.
