1838 P50C Half Dollar, Judd-72, Pollock-75, R.5, PR58 PCGS. The obverse depicts a draped bust of Liberty facing left. Liberty wears a diadem and a ribbon inscribed LIBERTY. The date is below. On the reverse, an eagle with outstretched wings holds four arrows in its right (facing) claw and an olive branch in its left (facing). The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination HALF DOLLAR are around the periphery. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. Medallic alignment--a diagnostic feature of virtually all known examples. A probable first restrike, we can find no evidence of extensive die rust or excessive striking softness in the centers. There is, however, a little rub from slight mishandling, but the surfaces present well for the grade with pleasing lavender-gray toning and champagne-red undertones. There is a tiny planchet flaw (as produced) in the obverse field before Liberty's jaw, but no singularly distracting marks. From the Harold Hoogasian Collection.
