1838-O<H10C> No Stars MS61 NGC. V-2. The advanced specialist will recognize this as an extremely important opportunity. The Valentine-2 variety is much scarcer than V-1 in all grades, and as recently as 1992 was considered unknown in Mint State, according to Al Blythe. This is a pleasing example, from a late die state with the obverse showing extensive die rust. This was struck during the first year of operation at the New Orleans Mint, and is one of just two collectible issues from that Mint with the 1838 date. Only half dimes, dimes, and half dollars were struck in New Orleans in 1838, and the half dollar is a major rarity. Highly lustrous surfaces are accented by grayish-gold and iridescent toning. The surfaces are not mark-free, yet are pleasing for the grade. At the time we offered this coin in 1983, we were only aware of one finer example (the Newlin-Garrett specimen).
Ex: E.M.
