1838 N-8 R1 PCGS graded MS64 BrownFrosty light steel brown with a few very faint streaks of slightly darker steel brown on the obverse. Traces of original mint red show on both sides, especially on the reverse where nearly 5% of that side shows some mint color. The surfaces are lustrous and nearly void of marks. A speck of dark toning under the second 8 and a nick on the bottom of the first S in STATES are the best identifying marks, and both are trivial. E-MDS, die state b. The fields are satiny from microscopic die flowlines but the recutting at RIC remains clear. The earlier die line at stars 5 & 6 is gone. Called MS63 and tied for CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #21824 (the CC#1 example resides in the ANS Museum). Our grade is MS63.
