1838 N-5 R1 PCGS graded MS65 Red & Brown, CAC ApprovedThe obverse is frosty mint red fading to steel brown with at least 20% of the original mint color remaining. The reverse is a darker shade of light olive and chocolate brown with bluish steel overtones and slightly faded mint red in protected areas. Satiny mint luster covers this cent and the eye appeal is quite nice. A small spot of darker toning at the outer point of star 10 and a very light nick near the hair under star 7 are the only notable marks. E-MDS, die state a, with a sharp spike up to the left from the coronet where it touches the curl. The reverse die clashmarks inside the wreath are clear and a faint die crack connects the E in STATES to the leaf tip below the adjacent T. This is the Newcomb plate coin for the variety in his 1944 reference (Plate IX, Obverse 5, Reverse E). Called MS63 and CC#1 in the Bland census. Noyes says MS63 and tied for CC#2, his photo #20667. AUCTION TERMS OF SALE
1. The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer shall be the buyer. In case of dispute the auctioneer may at his sole discretion reopen a lot. In all cases the auctioneer’s decision shall be final and binding on bidders.
2. The auctioneer reserves the right to refuse to honor any bid which, at his sole discretion, he feels is not submitted in good faith. The auctioneer may withdraw any lot, without prior notice, for any reason whatsoever.
3. All sales are payable in U. S. funds immediately upon receipt of invoice unless other arrangements have been made prior to the sale. Lots will not be released to buyers until paid for in full. Lots delivered in state of sale are subject to all applicable state and local taxes unless appropriate permits are on file with us.
4. Postage will be added to the invoice of all successful mail bidders.
5. A 20% buyer’s fee will be added to all invoices.
6. Please keep in mind this is not an approval sale. All sales are considered final. Sales to the floor may not be returned for any reason save authenticity. Sales to mail bidders are final unless lot proves to have been mis-attributed.
7. Mail bids, or phone bids will be accepted up through the day of the sale. Please direct email bids to friscomint@live.com. All bids will be reduced. Lots will open at one increment above second highest mail/phone bidder. 8. Consignors may bid or place a reserve bid on their own coins. Principals of the auction firm may consign and may bid on coins in the sale for themselves or clients.
