1838 N-16 R5- PCGS graded MS64 BrownLustrous steel brown and light chocolate with slightly faded mint color in the protected areas. A small planchet chip just right of the date, another thin one connecting the lower parts of the 3 & 8, and two tiny flakes in the dentils under star 13 (all as struck) are the only notable defects. Satiny mint frost covers this cent and the eye appeal is excellent. The usual die state with both dies excessively worn and lapped to reduce roughness prior to use in this short-lived marriage. Some of the die roughness remains but most of the field on both sides is smooth. The inside of the ear is flat and slightly reflective thanks to the excessive die polishing. Called MS60 and tied for CC#1 in the Bland census. Noyes says MS60 net AU55 and CC#4, his photo #20537. Our grade is MS60+.
