VAN BUREN, Martin. (1782-1862) Eighth President 1837-41, Vice President under Andrew Jackson 1833-37, Secretary of State 1829-31, Governor of New York, Senator. Van Buren, the first President born an American citizen, failed in three successive attempts to get reelected: losing to the Whig Candidate William Henry Harrison in 1840, losing the 1844 nomination to the “dark horse” candidate James K. Polk, and losing as a candidate of the antislavery faction of the Democrats, the Free Soil Party in 1848.
