“Am I Not A Woman And A Sister” Anti-Slavery Token Rulau-81 NGC Certified About Uncirculated-58

1838-Dated. Anti-Slavery Hard Times Token. “Am I Not A Woman And A Sister.” Rulau 81 (Low 54). NGC graded About Uncirculated-58 Brown.

28mm. This flashy, beautifully presented Anti-Slavery token is styled after Josiah Wedgewood’s very popular “Am I Not a Man and a Brother” plaque, a design which also appeared on some British tokens issued around 1795. Issued in America, this token sought to bring attention to the plight of slaves, particularly the black women who were being held in bondage in many of the States. The obverse features a Black woman on one knee, her arms shackled, pleading for humanity. The reverse has “Liberty 1838” within a wreath, with the words “United States Of America” surrounding. This token is a perfect, natural brown in color with smooth hard surfaces and highly attractive. Rarely seen in this quality, virtually Uncirculated, having only some light friction on its highest points.
