1838-D $5 MS63 NGC. McCloskey 1-A, R.3. The 1838-D is one of the most challenging condition rarities in the entire Half Eagle series from the Dahlonega mint. It is also a distinctive issue in that it is the only Classic Five from Dahlonega. Only 5-6 Mint State coins are believed extant today and this piece is tied for finest known with two other pieces. Another MS63 has been certified by PCGS and the MS63 coin in the Smithsonian is listed as the finest known on Winter's Condition Census. That, of course, effectively leaves only one other MS63 available to collectors (and, by the way, none are finer). The 1838-D is a curious issue. It is normally found with heavy abrasions but occasionally minimally marked coins are available. This is such a coin and it is extremely attractive. The surfaces display only the smallest signs of contact with other coins. The fields are bright and semi-reflective with shimmering green-gold color and a light bit of even reddish patina on each side. Other than the uncommonly clean surfaces, this coin is also noteworthy for its striking details. Every hair strand, star centril, and feather on the eagle is completely brought up. Look for this incredible coin to bring a record price when it crosses the auction block. From the Ashland City Collection.
