1838-D $5 MS62 PCGS. McCloskey 1-A, Variety 1-A, R.3. The 20,583 half eagles of this first-year issue, coined from a single die pair, are the only Classic Head half eagles minted at Dahlonega, and as such, they are popular with a broad cross-section of collectors. On the cover of the second edition of Gold Coins of the Dahlonega Mint, Douglas Winter placed an image of the Classic Head profile and a D mintmark underneath, a tribute to the design that appeared on the first coins issued from the Dahlonega Mint.
This solidly impressed representative has shining canary-gold surfaces with glints of green and orange in the lightly clashed obverse fields. Scattered marks and a thin abrasion to the left of Liberty's lips deny a Select designation. Nonetheless, this is an attractive example, easily one of the finest known representatives of this in-demand issue. Struck from a heavily polished obverse die that has part of Liberty's forelock and the stems of the olive leaves missing. Population: 5 in 62, 1 finer (7/07).

Coin Engraver: William Kneass

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
