1838-D $5 MS61 NGC.
1838-D $5 MS61 NGC.<p>This coin was previously offered as lot 8110 in our January 2002 FUN Signature Sale, where it was cataloged as: "Although less rare than its mintage of 20,583 pieces might suggest, this issue is the first D-mint Half Eagle and, as such, the survivors enjoy considerable popularity among gold specialists. In addition, this is the only Classic Head Five Dollar struck at the Georgia facility. This rare Uncirculated example is very sharply struck, with luster that is prooflike from many angles. While light abrasions are unavoidable in lower Mint State grades, there are no singularly mentionable abrasions. An attractive and desirable coin that is sure to be the bidding focus of many specialists." To this description we add that a few shallow planchet voids (as struck) in the obverse field between stars 6 and 7 helped us to establish the pedigree of this important representative of Southern gold. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
