1838-D $5 MS60 NGC. Variety 1-A, McClos
1838-D<$5> MS60 NGC. Variety 1-A, McCloskey 1-A, R.3. While the '38-D is generally available relative to other Dahlonega five dollar issues, and in a wide range of circulated grades, a strict Uncirculated coin is indeed very special and highly desirable. Each side of this specimen is bright and flashy, with light to medium green-gold color and only modest scuffiness in the fields, perhaps heightened by the scintillating luster. The strike is unusually bold with strong, clear definition on the hair curls over the ear and bold details on the eagle's plumage. A solitary diagonal slide mark appears on the cheek when viewed from selected angles, but this is of little consequence when one considers the overall eye appeal of this first-year Dahlonega five. Census: 3 in 60, 10 finer (2/06).
