1838-D $5 AU58 PCGS. Variety 1-A, McCloskey 1-A, R.3. The year's production for this denomination, 20,583 pieces from a single set of dies, is the point of intersection for many Mint milestones, oft-mentioned but worth repeating: the first and only denomination coined in the initial year of operation for Dahlonega, the only Classic Head half eagles from that Mint, and the corresponding niche as the only half eagles from that Mint to have the mintmark on the obverse.
The yellow-orange surfaces of this piece display ample remaining luster and surprisingly few marks. The devices are well-defined, a trait shared by many high-grade examples, with only a touch of highpoint friction. Though this issue is available for a price in grades through lower About Uncirculated, a near-Mint representative is a condition rarity, and many concede that the certified population contains a number of resubmissions. Population: 21 in 58, 11 finer (4/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
