1838-D $5 AU58 PCGS. McCloskey 1-A, R.3. Only one die pair is known for the 1838-D half eagle. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth (2006) write that it is: "...the third-rarest issue of the type, but not nearly as rare as the 1834 Crosslet 4 or the 1838-C." Most survivors are in the middle-level circulated grades, though a fair number of AU pieces exist. High-end AU examples, such as the AU58 coin described below, account for about 40 of the certified population; only about 20 Mint State specimens are known.
Bright yellow-gold surfaces retain ample luster, and exhibit sharply impressed design element, including excellent delineation in Liberty's hair curls and the eagle's plumage. A few minute marks are evenly distributed over each side, none of which are worthy of individual mention. Population: 20 in 58, 11 finer (10/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
