1838-C<$5> XF40 PCGS. Variety 1-A. A popular issue due to its status as the only Charlotte Mint half eagle that employs William Kneass' Classic Head design of 1834-1838 and because it is a one-year type coin. This issue is generally weakly struck. On this example the stars lack central detail, and the hair shows only moderate detail because of die lapping, circulation wear, and the weak strike. The eagle is weak on the neck and left (facing) wing, but the claws are bold and the legend is well detailed. The color is a pleasing combination of yellow- and copper-gold. The fields show moderate, grade-consistent hairlines, but perusal with a glass reveals no major distractions, save for a light scratch above the eagle's head. Despite numerous surface challenges, this is an appealing coin. Population: 21 in 40, 29 finer (12/05).
From The Carolina Gold Collection.
