1838-C<$5>--Surface Residue--ANACS. AU50 Details. Breen-6516, Repunched 5, Variety 1-B, R.4. The more rare of the two known die marriages. This sharp example has an uneven coat of lacquer. The fields are lightly hairlined, and the left obverse field has a striated appearance, possibly due to the lacquer residue. A dramatic die crack bisects the reverse between 1:30 and 7:30. The 1838-C has a low mintage of 17,179 pieces, and is significant as the only Classic half eagle from the Charlotte Mint.
