1838-C $5 AU58 NGC.
1838-C $5 AU58 NGC. Normal 5. McCloskey 1-A, R.5. Although this first-year C-mint half eagle is not known for sharp striking definition, the present example displays bold overall detail that wanes slightly over a few of the obverse star centrils. Traces of a semi-prooflike finish are evident at most angles, and the color is an attractive blend of green-gold and orange-gold shades. Typically abraded for the grade as well as the issue with a lamination (as struck) on the reverse near the uppermost arrowhead. There is another faint lamination on the obverse through star 10. The '38-C is typically offered in grades no finer than VF, and AU survivors number just 6-8 coins (per Winter). NGC and PCGS combined have certified just four coins in AU58, with a mere three Uncirculated pieces finer (11/03). Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
