<B>1838-C $5 AU50 NGC.</B></I> Breen-6517, Normal 5, Variety 1-A, R.4. Two die varieties of the 1838-C Classic half eagles are known. Breen described these two varieties as Normal 5 and Repunched 5, but failed to mention an unerringly simple attribution point. On this Normal 5 variety, the left-most leaf pair is distant from U of UNITED, while the Repunched 5 has the lower leaf joined to the left curve of U. This green-gold piece is sharp at the centers with flat stars and weak lettering on the reverse, typical of most or all that are known.
