1838-C $2 1/2 XF45 ICG.<p>No important offering of U.S. gold coins would be complete without at least one representative of the 1838-C Classic Quarter Eagle. Federal records indicate that only 7,880 coins were struck in this, the first year of Quarter Eagle production at the Charlotte Mint. The '38-C is not the rarest Quarter Eagle from this branch mint (it ranks 8th out of 20 issues in overall rarity along with the 1844-C, 1854-C, and 1856-C), but lightly worn survivors are always in demand for first-year type purposes. This is a pleasingly colored, olive-gold representative with bold overall definition despite light wear. The surfaces are abraded from circulation, but there are remarkably few distractions that warrant individual attention. A shallow planchet void (as struck) on Liberty's chin is noted for accuracy. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium.
