1838-C $2 1/2 MS63 NGC. Winter 1-A. A mere 7,880 pieces were struck of the 1838-C Quarter Eagle. Only 80-90 pieces are believed extant in all grades today with a surprising number of AU and BU coins known, suggesting that a small hoard of high grade pieces was dispersed at one time. This particular piece is listed as the # 5 coin on Winter's Condition Census. It is easily traced by the distinctive mark on Liberty's jawline. The surfaces are bright and semi-prooflike with light yellow-gold color. Like the two AU58 coins above, this piece has sharply defined centers but the peripheral stars have weak centrils. In addition to the nick on the jawline, this coin is also identifiable by a long, upside-down V-shaped scratch above the eagle's head. The devices show light satiny luster.
