1838-C $2 1/2 MS61 NGC. Variety 1-A. The U.S. Mint at Philadelphia, alone in production since 1793, was joined in 1838 by three Southern branch mints, set in Charlotte, Dahlonega (Georgia), and New Orleans. The 1838-C is the first of the C-mint quarter eagle issues, and has a small mintage of just 7,880 coins. The obverse mintmark is double punched on all 1838-Cs, first being entered low enough to touch the top of the 3 in the date. Both sides of this lustrous yellow-gold example are tinted in subtle green hues, creating a nice mixture of these original colorations. The central striking details are firmly impressed in all areas; even the stars are sharp. Survivors of this elusive issue are most often seen with at least 15 points of wear, with Fine and Very Fine pieces not out of the ordinary. Only a handful of 1838-C quarter eagles are around today at the Mint State level. This lovely, original example challenges the Condition Census lineup. Census: 4 in 61, 6 finer (12/05).
