1838 50C MS64 NGC. The 1838 is the first Half Dollar in U.S. coinage history on which the denomination is expressed as HALF DOL. It is not a rare date in an absolute sense, as 3.5 million coins were produced, but high grade survivors are surprisingly elusive in today's hobby. Apparently, few were saved at the time of issue. Wholly original with target-like golden-orange, sea-green, and antique-copper toning on the obverse, the reverse is mostly charcoal in color. The underlying mint frost is readily evident, especially as the frosty finished surfaces rotate under the light. Both sides are sharply impressed in the centers with no outwardly distracting abrasions. An obverse die crack (as struck) that connects stars 1-7 to the top of Liberty's cap is noted. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment.
