1838 $2 1/2 MS65 NGC. The Classic Head design type
1838 $2 1/2 MS65 NGC. The Classic Head design type was utilized from 1834 through 1839, and during this period there were several modifications to the obverse design. Quarter Eagles were produced at the branch mint in Charlotte, North Carolina, for the first time in 1838. In Philadelphia, just a single die pair was used to produce all 47,030 examples coined. This is an amazing Gem quality example of the issue with lustrous yellow-gold surfaces and sharp design definition. The surfaces are frosty and nearly mark-free. Seldom do Gem quality examples of this issue appear on the market, and in fact, PCGS and NGC have only certified 13 examples in MS65 or finer grades. Population: 3 in 65, 3 finer (1/05). Lot:7549
