1838 1C N-15, Low R.5--Environmental Damage--NCS. XF D 1838[1C] N-15, Low R.5--Environmental Damage-
1838<1C> N-15, Low R.5--Environmental Damage--NCS. XF Details. VF25 EAC. Graded VF20 in the Jack Robinson catalog, this is a Condition Census example of this rare, not in Newcomb, variety. Even as a mere Fine 15, Noyes places this coin in a tie for 10th finest known. This variety was first discovered by Walter Breen in 1959, and he turned up the second example some years later. Several more were located in the 1970s and 1980s, and today, perhaps 50 to 60 are known. The obverse is an early die state of the die that was later used for N-12, and the reverse is a middle state of the die that was also used for N-11 and N-16. Thus, the same reverse die was used for both varieties unknown to Newcomb. Note that the obverse die has crisp and bold dentilation, while the reverse has no dentilation visible. Any 1838 large cent with a similar appearance should be examined carefully for the characteristics of N-15, although John Wright noted that it could also be N-12. Attractive chestnut-brown surfaces with traces of darker steel color around the devices. Minor corrosion is also visible. The surfaces have a few minor blemishes, including some tiny planchet flakes. Most evident is a small chip in the lower left obverse field.
Ex: Clint Hollins (2/1/1982); Jack Robinson (Superior, 1/30/1989), lot 1168. Envelope Included.
