1838<1C> N-14, R.4. MS64 Brown NGC. AU55 EAC. Perfect obverse and reverse dies. What appears to be a die crack through star 9 and the outer hair bun is actually a minor planchet lamination. Graded AU50 by Bill Noyes and listed by him in a tie for fourth finest known of the variety. This is a scarce variety that was first publicized in the Dr. French catalog by B. Max Mehl in 1929. It was always identified by the massive rim break at star 6 (see next lot), and was considered unique until 1974. Two years later, a perfect die example was found, and since that time many such coins have been identified. It remains a scarce variety, however, and is still the rarest of those varieties known to Howard Newcomb. Glossy medium brown surfaces, the reverse tending toward olive. Traces of gold color on the high points, with a small corrosion spot on the reverse at ED. Hints of deeply faded red mint color are evident on both sides under close scrutiny.
Ex: George Ramont (4/17/1978). Envelope Included.
