1838<1C> N-14, R.4--Countermarked--NCS. VF Details. Fine 12 EAC. The obverse is stamped with a large G, and the reverse with a large L. Details remain evident inside the counterstamps on both sides, including certain letters of LIBERTY. This is the very important terminal die state with a large rim break over star 6. The rim break touches the upper point of star 5, and extends half the distance to star 7. Until Dick Punchard discovered a perfect die example of the N-14 variety in 1976, this rim break was considered diagnostic, and also the reason that the variety was so rare until that time. Even today, it is doubtful that more than 10 or 12 such coins have been identified. At the time of publication of The Cent Book in 1992, John Wright was only aware of six examples. Attractive mottled tan and steel surfaces with few problems, aside from the two letters stamped in the surface, and a small rim bruise of N of UNITED. Not only is this an extremely important die state for the advanced collector, but it is also important for the variety collector, representing the original die state known to Newcomb and the collecting fraternity for so many years. Envelope Included.
