1838 1C MS62 Brown NGC. VF30 EAC. N-16, Usual Die
1838 1C VF30. N-16.Ex: EAC Sale (4/89), lot 355. 1838 1C MS62 Brown NGC. VF30 EAC. N-16, Usual Die State, High R.5. The first example of this variety was purchased by John Wright out of the 1972 ANA auction, attributed as N-13. At the time, Walter Breen agreed with that attribution. A year later, Wright had finally realized that this was a new variety, and he reported it as such during the ANA Convention in 1973. Only recently did this variety move from R.6 to R.5. At the time of publication of The Cent Book in 1992, 19 examples of N-16 had been located. Today, approximately 35 examples are known, including five that are fully Mint State per EAC grading standards. Both of the new "not in Newcomb" varieties are from the same reverse die. That die was considerably worn by the time these coins were produced. A quick identification point is the broken right upright of N in CENT. Study this characteristic carefully, and you are well on your way to cherrypicking your own N-15 or N-16 cents. After you have located the broken N, look at the obverse. The top of E is high above R on the common N-11 variety, and the tops of these two letters are approximately even on both N-15 and N-16. Cherrypicking this variety is that easy. In the meantime, you can bid on this lot to satisfy your need for ownership. Based on EAC grading, this example has sharpness of about AU50, but with several abrasions and scratches on both sides. The surfaces are pleasing medium brown and tan with darker steel toning, and this coin retains considerable eye appeal.
Ex: W.J. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. This lot is being auctioned in conjunction with a live floor auction by Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers. All final auction and invoice information will be supplied by Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers, and all other information should be considered preliminary. Lot:3710
