1837 Token. Low-49, R.2. AU58 NGC. XF40 EAC. Eagle; Wreath. Not part of the American Half Cent series, but usually collected as such. This is the only Hard Times Token of the half cent denomination. Hard Times Tokens were issued at a time when Federal coinage was scarcely seen in circulation. Some Hard Times Tokens were political or satirical, while others were merely advertising trade pieces. Very few, such as this issue, took a neutral position. John Ford once called these "neutral money substitutes." Walter Breen traced this token to one Edward Hulseman of New York City. He based this attribution on punch linkage to tokens known by that engraver. Gorgeous olive-brown surfaces with traces of corrosion visible only with a glass.
Ex: "Woody" Blevins (12/31/1984). Envelope Included.
