1837 Substitute for Shin Plasters, Low-46, HT-57, R.1, AU55 NGC. NGC has misattributed the piece as HT-56 which, unlike HT-57, has a berry beneath the second E in DEFENCE. A phoenix rises from the flames, in a departure from the Liberty head type. This glossy mahogany-brown piece is well struck, and has exceptionally pleasing surfaces. The allusion to shin plasters refers to the worthless issues of many of the broken banks of the period. The device of the phoenix rising from the flames seems to mean that paper money was only fit to be burned, and that with its destruction new life would spring from its ashes.
From The Troy Wiseman Collection.
