1837 N-5 R2 Plain Hair Cord, Small Letters PCGS graded AU58, CAC Approved
Choice glossy medium brown and light chocolate with traces of faded mint red in protected areas on the reverse. Smooth and very attractive with just a hint of friction on the highpoints. There are a few minor defects including a dull nick on the eye brow, a couple nicks on the rim over NIT in UNITED, and shallow planchet laminations under the T in CENT and below the end of the wreath stem (as struck). M-LDS. The die line connecting the feet of the I & T in UNITED is gone but the dull wave from the bottom of the second S in STATES to the left foot of the first A in AMERICA has not formed. There is clear doubling on the tops of UNIT. Our grade is AU50+, close to AU55. A nice example of the Plain Hair Cord with Small Letters variety, a popular "Redbook" type. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label.
