1837 N-5 R2 PCGS graded MS64RB. PCGS graded MS-64 Red & Brown. Plain Hair Cord with Small Letters. Mellowed red fading to steel brown, about half the planchet showing some of the faded red color. There are a few small spots of darker steel brown toning, including one at the dentils under the 3 in the date and another under the first S in STATES. A glass reveals a few tiny contact marks, including a thin vertical nick on the jawline and a very light diagonal nick in the field off the chin. MDS with fine die flowlines covering the fields on both sides. Called MS63 and tied for CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #21743. Bland says MS70- and CC#1. Our grade is MS63. Regardless of the census list used, this piece is one of the very finest known of the PHC/SL "Redbook" type, which is only available with this N-5 die variety. PCGS Population 1; none finer.
