1837 Liberty Seated H10C. No Stars, Lg Date NGC MS65
1837 Liberty Seated Half Dime. No stars, large date. NGC graded MS65. For the date, a frosty, satiny white gem with deep cartwheel luster on both sides. Attractively struck as well, with not even a hint of softness at the drapery folds or shield, the legends or the wreath. During the latter half of the 1830s, upon the ascension of Martin Van Buren as President in 1837, Mint officials decided to spruce up the silver coinage. They picked Christian Gobrecht to redesign silver half dime, among other pieces, for which he created his now-famous rendition of an allegorical Liberty seated on a boulder in an open field; in one hand she supports a shield, while in her other, a pole with liberty cap dangling from the end. Gobrecht's motif first appeared on Silver Dollars of 1836. Dimes and Half Dimes followed in 1837, with stars added in 1838 (PCGS # 4311)
