1837 Hard Times Token Low-118A Unlisted in Rulau R7
1837 Hard Times Token Low-118A Unlisted in Rulau R7+ (with counterstamp) Feuchtwanger's Metal. AU-58. Lustrous bright silvery gray, just starting to tone a darker steely gray on the reverse (denomination side). The obverse (eagle side) displays some faint hairlines in the fields, possibly from a light cleaning. No other defects. Just a hint of rub on the highest points from mint state, and the fields are slightly reflective on both sides. This "Defiant Eagle" version of Dr. Feuchtwanger's 3-Cent token is rare in its own right, but there are only 3 or 4 examples known with the JMP counterstamp, which is always carefully positioned under the WA at the top of the reverse. This stamp appears to be from a silversmith, but its origin has not been traced. The counterstamped version of Low-118 has appeared at auction only 8 times (including this listing), the most recent being in the Ford collection sale (Stack's 6/23/2004:214).
Estimated Value $2,000-UP.
