<B>1837 H10C No Stars, Small Date (Flat Top 1) MS65 NGC. CAC.</B></I> The Small Date variety of the No Stars 1837 half dime is considerably more elusive in the higher Mint State grades than the Large Date, although there is little difference in the actual size of the dates. The Small Date has a flat-topped 1, the date in a straight line, and a so-called "Block" 8 (loops farther apart than on the "Script" 8 of the Large Date). This sharply struck (as usual for the variety) Gem boasts beautiful blue-green and pinkish-gold patina on each side--a bit deeper on the obverse--and effulgent mint luster. The swelling on the HA of the denomination appears to be from die fatigue, and the reverse is rotated about 20 degrees clockwise with respect to the obverse. A lovely example of this No Stars type variant.
