1837 H10C No Stars PR67 NGC
1837 H10C No Stars Half Dime PR67 NGC. Ex: Pittman/Kaufman. V-1. Large Date, Tripled 8. David Akers writes in the Pittman catalog that 20 or more proofs were coined on July 25, 1837, with additional pieces struck later in the year. Survivors are known in two die states. The Kaufman collection includes the more desirable early die state with a perfect obverse die and the date recutting prominent, certainly one of the July proofs. The superb early state Pittman-Kaufman coin and the less desirable late state Eliasberg specimen are tied for the finest known.
The estimated population of 20 proofs is greater than most other proof issues over the next two decades. Recently offered survivors include only three Gems with the following pedigrees:

1. PR67 NGC. The coin offered here. Numismatic Gallery (7/15/1947, privately); John Jay Pittman (David Akers, 10/1997), lot 452.

2. PR67 NGC. Louis E. PR65 NGC. Amon Carter (Stack's, 1/1984), lot 103; Bowers and Merena (8/1999), lot 83.

Rich peripheral cobalt-blue color surrounds deep rose-gold and iridescent toning at the centers on each side of this Superb Gem proof. Fully detailed design motifs are lustrous with obvious cameo contrast beneath the toning, although NGC has not assigned a Cameo designation. Deeply mirrored and perfectly preserved fields are evident through the toning.
The 1, 3, and 7 of this recut date are boldly doubled, and the lowest curve of the tripled 8 passes through a dentil. All remaining obverse and reverse die details are normal. The No Stars design represents the Liberty Seated obverse as Christian Gobrecht created it, essentially a miniature version of the famous 1836 Gobrecht dollars. Census: 2 in 67, 0 finer (6/07).
From The Phil Kaufman Collection of Early Proof Sets, Part One. (#4407)

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
