1837<H10C> Large 5C. V-5, LM-3, R.6. Reiver state a.--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. VF Details. A very rare die pairing that is seldom offered for sale. The surfaces are a bit dull from a past cleaning, but are now toned medium gray. The strike is blunt on both Liberty's shoulder and the eagle's wing, as always seen on this variety. Identifiable by a minor field nick below the UR of PLURIBUS on the reverse.
This variety was discovered by David J. Davis in 1975 and has remained quite difficult to obtain despite legions of variety collectors seeking any that are offered. Jules found this example at the FUN show in 1984. I recall talking with him about this discovery, he said he was so excited that he asked to see all the early coins the dealer had and spent quite a bit more money with the same dealer after cherry picking this coin. Such discoveries are part of the joys of attending coin shows, and over many years this is how a great collection is built. The present example rates in the mid range of the top known of this variety as reported in the John Reich Condition Census published in The John Reich Journal December 2005 of just 6 coins noted plus the present example.
Ex: The FUN Show, (January 1984). Envelope Included.
