1837 Feuchtwanger Three Cents MS63 PCGS. HT-263, R.5. A defiant eagle faces left and stands on a rock. While the Bavarian-born chemist Lewis Feuchtwanger tenaciously began lobbying Congress in the 1830s for the introduction of coinage using his composition of copper, nickel, zinc, and tan, powerful nickel interests eventually prevailed upon the conclusion of the Civil War. Although Feuchtwanger's One Cent German-silver (which he called "argentan") tokens are relatively plentiful, his Three Cent tokens are undeniably scarce, particularly in Mint State. This outstanding example may certainly be one of the finest piece extant for the denomination. The strike is very well executed and lustrous steel-gray surfaces display light toning streaks down both sides. Population: 1 in 63, 0 finer (11/05).
