1837 Feuchtwanger Three Cents Fine 15 NGC. HT-262, R.3. This is an example of a trial piece minted by Dr. Lewis Feuchtwanger, who had produced a metal alloy consisting of nickel, copper, and zinc, which he proposed to the U.S. government as a substitute for copper. There are two varieties of the 1837 Three Cent piece, this one showing the New York Coat of Arms on the obverse side, which is quite worn, although the date is easily readable. The reverse is actually in considerably better condition, with light wear and all of the original design details still evident. Both sides are a light to medium-olive color, and the only surface abrasions are a few trivial tics and short, wispy scratches on the reverse.
