The silver-gray features are silent on the subject of distracting blemishes with an overall bold strike that is well above average in all regards. Probably one of the finest survivors of this elusive die marriage. Dr. Lewis Feuchtwanger of New York petitioned Congress in 1837 to accept his composition of German silver for the U.S. Cent. The Feuchtwanger Cents, as they are known today, were prepared to demonstrate the striking characteristics of this composition. Although supported by Senator Thomas Hart Benton, Feuchtwanger's proposal failed to meet with the approval of Mint Director Robert Maskell Patterson.
