1837 50C MS66 NGC. The mintage of the initial-year 183
1837<50C> MS66 NGC. The mintage of the initial-year 1836 issue in the Capped Bust, reeded edge half dollars was a paltry 1,200 pieces. As a result, numismatists turn to this second-year issue for type purposes, with a much more generous mintage of more than 3.6 million examples. The present coin has brilliant cartwheel luster, with just a touch of silver-gold patina on each side. A phenomenally bold strike greets the viewer of this delectable Premium Gem specimen. Every star save for one shows its full central details, each strand of hair is sculpted, and the eagle's claws and feathers are all crisp and full. A wispy obverse die crack runs from the eyebrow through LI in LIBERTY and up to the top fold of the cap. On the reverse, a much larger die crack runs from 50C clockwise near the rim through UNITED STA. Light clash marks also show on the reverse, which is rotated about 45 degrees counterclockwise. This piece, one of the most boldly struck this cataloger has ever seen, approaches the top end of certified examples, with only five pieces at NGC and PCGS finer (7/06).
