1837 50C MS65 PCGS. The Reeded Edge half dollars were 1837
1837<50C> MS65 PCGS. The Reeded Edge half dollars were the first U.S. regular-issue coin series struck on a steam press, at the new weight standard mandated by a law passed in January 1837. Numismatists have debated endlessly over whether the rare 1836 Reeded Edge half dollars--of which 1,200 are thought to have been made--are patterns or regular issues. The new coin necessitated a change in design, and accordingly Mint Engraver Christian Gobrecht (who was nearly simultaneously working on the designs for the Gobrecht silver dollars, also introduced in 1836) merely redesigned the old John Reich Liberty motif. The 1837 Reeded Edge half dollar fills the needs of type collectors, with its immensely more available emission of more than 3.6 million examples.
The present piece offers delightfully lustrous light olive, gold, and gray toning on the obverse, with a tinge of russet on the reverse periphery. This piece shows astounding surface preservation; diligent searching with a loupe locates only a single small tick under Liberty's eye. This specimen is also exceedingly well struck. Some light die erosion is noted on the obverse stars. Encapsulated in an older green-label holder. Population: 16 in 65, 7 finer (6/06).
