1837<50C> MS65 PCGS. Reeded Edge half dollars were the first series struck on a steam press in this country. Perhaps because of a superficial similarity to the previous Capped Bust design, the general public at the time took little notice of these coins. As a result, high grade examples are quite rare. This piece is fully detailed in all areas (not always the case with Reeded Edge halves), and the mint luster is bright and vibrant beneath the rich layerings of original color. Deep purple-rose and forest-green toning adorns the obverse, while the reverse displays a pleasing array of red-orange, electric-green, and mottled charcoal patina. The 7 in the date is widely recut, and neither side of the piece reveals any distracting marks or blemishes. This offering represents a significant bidding opportunity for the advanced collector.
