1837[50C] MS65 NGC.
1837<50C> MS65 NGC. The 1837 is one of only two issues of Christian Gobrecht's Reeded Edge, 50 CENTS Reverse Half Dollar. The scarcity of the low mintage (1,200 pieces) 1836 explains the desirability of the 1837 among high quality type collectors. In 1836 the use of the "new" steam coining press necessitated a design change from John Reich's Capped Bust design to a somewhat similar design by Christian Gobrecht. The obsolete lettered edge was replaced by a reeded edge in 1836, however, as previously stated, only a limited number were struck. General production began the next year with over 3.6 million 1837 examples being coined (50 CENTS on the reverse), and these have become the most available date for this two year type. The latter issue is also a condition rarity in its own right, and few survivors possess the relatively abrasion-free surfaces of this richly toned representative. Warm copper-gray toning overlays the centers with gunmetal-blue patination interspersed. Fully struck in all areas, an exceptionally smooth example. Population: 32 in 65, 16 finer (4/04).

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
