<B>1837 50C MS64 NGC.</B></I> The Capped Bust, Reeded Edge half was produced for only four years: 1836-1839. This already short series is further subdivided into types with the denomination expressed as 50 CENTS (1836-1837) and HALF DOL. (1838-1839). Given the paltry original mintage of the 1836, the 1837 (3.6 million pieces) is the only readily obtainable representative of the former variety. On the other hand, interested bidders should take note that the Reeded Edge half is conditionally challenging as a series with examples at or near the Gem level scarce and underrated. The present lot offers a gorgeous, original near-Gem whose otherwise golden tinged surfaces are splashed in mottled crimson-russet and cobalt-blue peripheral shadings. The otherwise sharp strike wanes a little in selected areas at the obverse rim, but there are no singularly mentionable distractions save for a field graze behind Liberty's head.
